Fat content colour code on biscuits

AWARENESS OF CONSUMER’S  ABOUT FAT CONTENT ON BISCUITS

(A case study of Kelanimulla G.N. Division in Colombo district)

A biscuit is a popular quick bread-like snack and is usually called a bakery product. It is a baked food that contains flour, sugar, and fats.

People tend to consume a lot of biscuits, but they should know whether biscuits are healthy to consume and what nutritional components they include.

However, biscuits can also harm health due to some of the ingredients and unnecessarily eating biscuits.

Therefore, the government introduces color coding for sugar, salt and fat contained in solid and semi – solid food items will come into effect from June 01, 2019.

The regulation made by the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, under Section 32 of the Food Act, No. 26 of 1980, in consultation with the Food Advisory Committee, have been published in the Extraordinary Gazette on April 17 and is cited as “The Food (Color coding for Sugar, Salt and Fat) Regulations – 2019”.

The primary objective of introducing by government the regulation is to serve as a guide for the people suffering from non-communicable diseases (NCD), whose numbers are currently growing in the country, when choosing food based on levels of sugar, salt and fat contained and also to create an awareness among the general public with regard to food.

Here, I have used the case study topic of fat color code contained in biscuit label

I saw there are so many peoples suffering from non - communicable disease including high cholesterol. And also I got to know It may cause for regular eating of biscuits.

But I wanted to know the reason for the increase in the consumption of biscuits even though the label of the biscuit packet has a color code on it. Therefore, based on high cholesterol as a non-communicable disease, I chose this topic to know about the awareness of people about the amount of fat on biscuit packets.

CONCLUTION

According to the case studied, consumers have some awareness about the fat color code on the biscuit packet, but I feel that their attention is not enough for that.

Most of the consumer, who participated in this case study, indicated that this fat content color code is useful. Thus I felt that consumers have a broad idea about the importance of this color code.

It is my conclusion that there is a risk of contracting non-communicable diseases by constantly eating junk snacks like biscuits, and they should buy biscuits using the relevant color codes according to the diseases they have and consumers should continue to pay attention to these color codes.
